Eidos Releases Tomb Raider Underworld

Eidos has released Tomb Raider Underworld, the latest video game in the ongoing Tomb Raider series. The offical website is at tombraider.com. Actress Alison Carrol - who has been playing Lara Croft in the real world - explains how Lara Croft has been motion captured for the first time in Underworld the AP clip below. More about Alison here.

The new game received generally favorable ratings according to Metacritic although they were criticized by Kotaku for trying to control review scores. Wikipedia’s entry says Underworld is the eighth game in the series and we have a feeling it won’t be the last.

WordPress 2.6.5

WordPress 2.6.5 is immediately available and fixes one security problem and three bugs. We recommend everyone upgrade to this release.

The security issue is an XSS exploit discovered by Jeremias Reith that fortunately only affects IP-based virtual servers running on Apache 2.x. If you are interested only in the security fix, copy wp-includes/feed.php and wp-includes/version.php from the 2.6.5 release package.

2.6.5 contains three other small fixes in addition to the XSS fix. The first prevents accidentally saving post meta information to a revision. The second prevents XML-RPC from fetching incorrect post types. The third adds some user ID sanitization during bulk delete requests. For a list of changed files, consult the full changeset between 2.6.3 and 2.6.5.

Note that we are skipping version 2.6.4 and jumping from 2.6.3 to 2.6.5 to avoid confusion with a fake 2.6.4 release that made the rounds. There is not and never will be a version 2.6.4.

Get WordPress 2.6.5.

Apple Pushes Its Way Into Gaming With iPhone and iPod Touch

iPod TouchCan Apple push its way into the gaming industry with the iPod Touch and iPhone? It sure looks like it. They obviously cannot challenge the game consoles with these small devices but they can challenge Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.

The WSJ reports in the video below that Apple recently started marketing some of its games in an advertisement for the iPod Touch. There are also startups making games just for Apple’s gadgets like ngmoco - that’s a screenshot of ngmoco’s Rolando iPod Touch game pictured on the right. Other articles about Apple’s entrance into the gaming market can be found here, here, here, here and here. If Apple is successful then could an Apple game console be far away? It would be a surprise if Apple tried to take on the Nintendo, Xbox 360 or PlayStation when they have so much riding on the iPhone but nothing should be completely ruled out.
