Bidding war for Asteroids film rights
Ever thought that controlling a triangular ship and shooting heaps of rock in space would make a great basis for a film? Apparently, four movie studios thought so, as a bidding war for the silver screen rights for Atari game Asteroids was won by Universal this week. The script will be written by Matthew Lopez and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
And if you fancy a different twist on the classic Atari game, you can turn your own desktop in to a game with Desktop Blaster on the SciFi Channel website.
Nintendo and Five look for Britain’s Best Brain
In a surprising move, Nintendo have struck an Advertiser-Funded Program deal with channel Five to produce a primetime quiz show titled “Britain’s Best Brain”, costing a reported £2 million. The show will involve national heats, which VG247 reports will consist of DS and Wii games including Brain Training, Wii Fit and Big Brain Academy – although unlike in America, there are strict laws against product placement in the UK, meaning that getting the games in to the show may be difficult.
Not Quite Left 4 Dead
Recent comments from Valve that they will continue to support Left 4 Dead despite the incoming sequel have been reiterated this week, as Doug Lombardi told CVG said “”We plan to keep supporting Left 4 Dead 1. There will be some announcements coming before summer’s out about what’s coming there.” It will be released on both PC and Xbox 360.
Try before you die
If you’re waiting for the sequel Left 4 Dead 2, you won’t have to wait until launch day. Like with the first game, a demo will be released before the release. People who pre-order at certain retailers or through digital distribution service Steam will be given advanced access to the demo.

Fez coming to Xbox Live Arcade
Independent developer Polytron announced that their title Fez, will be released on Xbox Live Arcade in 2010. The game is a 2D/3D shifting platformer, which has already won the “Excellence in Visual Art” awards at the Independent Games Festival.
There is no date for a Fez to be a clothing option for your Xbox Avatar yet.
Activision defends cost of DJ Hero
Upcoming mix simulator DJ Hero will be released at £107.99 according to various retailers. Activision refused to comment on price strategies to Eurogamer this week, but claimed that “with over 100 individual songs that are highlighted in over 80 unique mixes”, the game “will provide tremendous value for our consumers”. It may be good value, but that doesn’t mean that it is not too expensive.
Notable Releases
It’s a week of multiplatform mania as Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince along with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2010 get released on the majority of platforms under the sun. There’s some catchup on PC as Street Fighter IV and Virtua Tennis 2009 see their release, and Renegade Kid’s first person shooter Moon finally hits European shores.
And finally – if you’re more interested in creating rather than playing, check out Kodu on Xbox 360 Indie Games this week. It’s 400 points, and takes a more visual approach to making a game. Let us know if you’ve made anything exciting with it!
